Houston, TX -- Clear Channel Outdoor is partnering with the Houston Area Apartment Association and the YMCA of Greater Houston to help eliminate drownings through an awareness campaign that include more than 40 donated billboards reminding parents and others to watch children around the water.  The campaign, Water Wise, in its sixth year, is designed to educate the community about drowning prevention.  Pictured here at the unveiling of the first billboards to be displayed this year are Gwen Carter, Children’s Protective Services (left); Kristine Meyerson, YMCA Director of Aquatics; Jenifer Paneral, president, Houston Apartment Association and Clear Channel Vice President of Public Affairs, Lee Vela.  YMCA Water Wise is a multifaceted awareness program that includes free swim lessons at area apartment communities. The program targets low-income, minority children who are less likely to learn to swim than their peers. The billboard campaign and educational materials are printed in English and Spanish.  There is a dire need for water safety education in the greater Houston area. Nine children have drowned in the greater Houston area so far this year, all of which have been under the age of 10. Drowning claims the lives of nearly 3,000 people every year; however, children four years of age and younger have the highest drowning death rate.

Houstonians are working hand-in-hand with Houston area local, state, and federal law enforcement authorities in the fight against gang crime.  Thirty-five gang fugitives featured on the website, and publicized weekly by local media and on Houston area digital billboards donated by Clear Channel Outdoor, have been captured within the past year.

Since the website went public in September of 2010, more than 1700 tips have come in through the website, and more than 600 related arrests have been made.  To date, the innovative website especially created to improve communication between law enforcement and the public, has been visited more than 200,000 times.  Now, an enhanced partnership with Crime Stoppers will reward citizens with cash for tips that lead to an arrest or the filing of felony charges.

As a public service to the community, Clear Channel Outdoor has donated space and time on their digital billboards throughout the area to publicize each week’s featured fugitive.  This week’s fugitive, Gus Matthew Soto, being featured on digital billboards and the website, is wanted for Aggravated Robbery.  Pictured here at a press event to announce the results is Clear Channel Vice President for Public Affairs, Lee Vela with area law enforcement officials.  


Hurricane Season Countdown In Harris County

Hurricane season began June 1 and Clear Channel Outdoor-Houston began reminding residents early in the region so prone to storms with a countdown to the season on area digital billboards with a virtual clock.  Pictured here at a press event to help remind people are OAAT President and Clear Channel VP of Public Affairs, Lee Vela and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.  Clear Channel has created the Gulf Coast Emergency Communications Network working with four counties to inform citizens before, during and even after a storm in the area.  Hurricane preparedness messages replaced the countdown after June 1.   


The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and Clear Channel Outdoor Americas Launch New Billboard Campaign Timed with National Missing Children’s Day

Images of local missing Texas children will appear on digital billboards across Texas beginning May 25, 2016

New York, NY and Houston, Texas – Today the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) Texas Center for the Missing (TCM) and Clear Channel Outdoor Americas (CCOA) (NYSE: CCO), subsidiary of iHeartMedia Inc., participated in press events throughout major Texas markets to launch a new digital billboard campaign calling attention to the ongoing searches for local missing children. Some families of missing children, along with local law enforcement working these unsolved cases, spoke at press events throughout the state today and urged the public to share any information they have regarding the disappearance or whereabouts of these children by calling 1.800.THE.LOST (1.800.843.5678).

Timed to begin with National Missing Children’s Day (May 25), and running through June, CCOA will display images of missing children from Austin, Greenville, El Paso, and Spring, Texas on the company’s digital billboards across the state.

This builds on last year’s highly visible “Summer of Hope” initiative, a national digital out of-home campaign, that called attention to the plight of missing children and their families and reminded everyone you “don’t have to wait 24 hours to report a missing kid.”   

The country is in the midst of a persistent missing and exploited children crisis nationwide, with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) reporting over 460,500 entries for missing children in 2015, on par with reports of missing children made to law enforcement in 2014. Specifically, the Texas Department of Public Safety Missing Persons Clearinghouse received 57,810 missing person reports in 2015, 46,121 of which were juveniles.

“Public safety, and child safety in particular, remains a core tenet of our corporate social responsibility efforts,” said Michelle Costa, regional president, CCOA-Southern. “Our digital billboards have the ability to reach passersby in high-traffic areas as they are out and about. We hope our efforts can play a role in reuniting these children with their families.”

According to NCMEC, photos are one of the most vital tools for law enforcement when searching for a missing child, and have the power to produce leads that can help law enforcement give families’ answers and help safely recover children. The new billboard campaign enables NCMEC and TCM to reach a broad audience across Texas by distributing photos of missing children in targeted areas that can aid law enforcement with a search.
